Sophia Garden is a community-supported agricultural (CSA) project of the Sisters
of St. Dominic, providing organically grown vegetables to garden members and
needy families in the community. CSA members share responsibility with the
farmer for the cost and success of the garden. In return they share in the
bounty of the harvest. At Sophia, we get an abundance of wonderful vegetables.
We also get our hands dirty harvesting carrots, pulling weeds, turning the
compost, helping the farmer however we can. We have parties and share recipes,
publish newsletters and organize fundraisers. The garden has a rich agricultural
and spiritual legacy. The Dominican Sisters have lived on this land since 1875
and farmed it for much of that time. The garden was named in honor of a special
Dominican sister named Sophia who loved the earth and lived her life caring for
it. Sophia is also the name given in the scriptures to the feminine face of God,
the incarnation of wisdom. The work of the farm connects us to that wisdom.
